There are a total of 49 sports in the Olympics, including both Summers as well as the Winter Olympics. And out of this number, there is an observation that only people with way too much free time could make, that none of the sport starts with these alphabets: O, P, Q, U, X, Y, and Z.

It is not important to know, but you could give it a read if you’re bored and randomly jumping on the web. So, it’s not as such there are no sports in the world which starts with those alphabets like there is Polo, Quad Roller Skating, Care, etc.; also, given the number of thousands of sports in the world, it’s nearly impossible for any alphabet to be left out.

But, given the scarcity of their being known, let’s try and know about some of the few sports which start from one of the left out alphabets. Let’s go with ‘U’ this time. Hence, we shall see a few of the sports with ‘U’ in the ‘initial of their initials.’ As of now, let us know about the ones mentioned below;

Sports which Start with U

Ultimate- Have you played Frisbee? If yes, you’re near to understanding this sport, you may think of it as a derivative of frisbee; for that case, it is also known as ‘Ultimate Frisbee. ’

There are two teams needed to play this game, with each team containing seven members, sometimes fewer members are also worked out with. The teams stand at each end by facing each other.

Once the frisbee is thrown in the field, both the teams’ job is to catch the frisbee thrown by their opponent, which means to hijack the catch of their opponent without physically tackling each other if they do so, they score a point.

Underwater Football– Well, if you have seen the movie Shaolin Soccer, then you may get a flash of thought by hearing of this sport, although no metal footballs and drugs are involved here. As the name suggests, the game is played underwater, using a negatively buoyant rugby ball.

There are two teams involved in playing this game, and each team has to pass and run with the ball to keep it in the goal at the other end, which is the rival team’s pit. And when they do so, they fetch a score for themselves. Every player can go to the water surface to take a breath at any time, and any number of times, but not if the player is holding the ball.

Underwater Hockey– Another underwater sport, which is also known as the Octopush. This game is the underwater version of hockey, with few differences as per the difference in a field environment.

The players dribble and pass the puck through the floor surface to make the puck reach the other end, and when they do, they score. The players are not allowed to use an oxygen tank or scuba gear, and they have to play by holding their breath and then come to the surface when they need to take a breath.

According to Wikipedia, the apparatus needed for this sport are a diving mask, snorkel, fins, water polo cap, stick or pusher, protective glove, exterior mouth guard, puck, and a healthy airy pair of Lungs!

Ultramarathon- As the name suggests, it is the ultra version of a marathon, which means this sport deals with distances larger than 42 KM, which is the cap to the usual marathon. Some of these ultramarathon events go till and beyond the timeframe of 24 hours and the distance of 1600 KMs.

Japan seems to be leading the wall of fame for Ultramarathon, as the world record for 100 KM marathon is held by a Japanese citizen named Nao Kazami with the timing of 06:09:14, this record was made in 2018.

Unicycle racing– That famous one wheel cycle, which you may have seen the performers riding in a circus during their performance. Now put the rider of this cycle competing with other unicycle riders, and Unicycle racing is born.

These cycles came into existence in the 19th century, and it has seen various versions of it within these 200 years.

The range of the distance for this cycle race is from 100 meters to a full-fledged marathon. Judging is done by logging when the wheel crosses the finish line and not the rider’s body. This sport sounds interesting, cute, and funny at the same time.

Ultralight Aviation– This sport involves the flying of very light-weight planes which could carry two people at most. Although the definition of lightweight aircraft differs from country to country, it still seems to be recognized as a fun sport nearly everywhere.

This aircraft range from being as heavy as 70 KG to 750 KG, in the former case, even the pilot might result in being heavier than the aircraft itself.

This aircraft’s major classification of usage is done for sports and recreational basis, but in some places, this aircraft is allowed to be used for other than these purposes too.

Ulama- This Mexican game is one of the ball games, which again requires two teams to indulge in. One of the games that have been fading slowly, but it has seen a revival in the Mexican state Sinaloa.

Mainly this game is played in three forms, Hip Ulama, Forearm arm and Ulama de Palo. All the players have to keep the ball moving within the boundary, and the one who hits it out of the field gives away a point to the other team.

Well, so these were a few of some games whose names start from ‘U’, and that is not the only thing unique about them, but their non-popularity among the masses gives them another trait that is common to their group.

If you have developed a sort of interest in knowing about more games with ‘U’, you may Google Unicycle Basketball and Urban Golf.

And see if you wish to give a try to any of them!
