Sony today silently updated the Xperia SP software support page to mention that it will not be updating the device to Android 4.4 KitKat. The company had initially promised to roll out the latest version of Android to its mid-range handset, but has changed its mind for some unknown reasons. Sony had launched the Xperia SP back in May 2013 and had updated its support page towards the end of 2014 to reflect that it would be getting the Android 4.4 KitKat update sometime down the line.
Considering that Google had optimized Android 4.4 KitKat for low to mid-range devices with only 512MB RAM, there really is no excuse for Sony to not update the Xperia SP to one of the lightest versions of Android ever released. The device also falls well within the 18 month update cycle that is usually promised by most OEMs for providing software support. The Xperia SP comes with a dual-core Krait processor clocked at 1.7GHz and 1GB of RAM, which is more than enough to smoothly run KitKat and is still better than what most mid-range devices offer today. Xperia SP owners, what do you think about your handset not getting the KitKat update? Will you be buying another Xperia handset now?
